Lashihai Lake forms the centre of the Lashihai Watersheld Nature Reserve, covering an area of about 265.6 square metres. It is a haven for migratory birds. About 30,000 birds of around 70 species come here during the winter, from the end of October to early April every year. It is therefore a perfect place for ardent bird watchers, and exhibits how harmoniously humans and nature can co-exist.
The area not only has animals, plants, forests and water bodies to boast of, but also houses a variety of different cultures. There are about 28 villages accommodating 20,000 residents of Naxi, Yi, Han and Tibetan origin. The Tibetans mostly live in one of the biggest Tibetan Buddhist Temples in Lijiang - the Zhiyun Temple. The daily lives of the locals are affected a little by the world outside, but their traditional customs and culture remain strong.
