To the Naxi minority, this Festival is more important than Spring Festival. On this day Naxi people worship their patron saint San Duo in a large communal ceremony held at Sanduo Temple, or Beiyue Temple, where the spirit of San Duo was originally enshrined.

"Bangbang" or Stick Festival, is a major market day in the Lijiang old town at the old market square. The market square is a hive of activity as people haggle over farm tools, plants and children's toys.

The Musuo people of Lugu Lake are revered as the only living matriarchal society in the world. For the Zhuanshan Festival, this Naxi minority sub-group dress in their best clothes to worship the Gemu (Lion) Goddess Mountain and pray for her protection.

The origins of the Torch Festival can be traced back to the Nanzhao Kingdom when the wife of a man burned to death by the King, expressed her distaste for the King's proposition, and her passion, by leaping into a fire. It is predominantly a Yi minority Festival, but is now also celebrated by the Naxi and Bai minorities.
