Shopping in Lijiang

The Tea-Horse Ancient Road, a trade route in south-western China as important as the Silk Road, was very famous during the rule of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). This ancient trade route passed through the Yunnan provinces of Sichuan and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. What remains of the old trade route is Lijiang Old Town, which used to be an important commercial centre in the old days. Efforts at preservation have maintained the original commercial pattern of the town with Square Street serving as the hub around which everything else is centred.

Shopping Places

LIjiang Old Town

If you can't find somewhere to shop in Lijiang Old Town then you aren't in it. In times gone by it was a trading hub for many regional minorities and Tibetan traders from Yunnan, Sichuan and Tiber. The Old Town is still a major commercial centre servicing local Naxi people and tourists alike. Many of the shopfronts have been sold by Naxi residents to Han traders so you can gather any kind of ware from the tacky to the glamorous. In the early morning, when the shops are closed you are offered a quaint scene of slanting red door frames lining a labyrinth of alley ways. Look out for Lijiang specialities such as Yao wine, Dongba hieroglyphs, copper locks and traditional Naxi seven star shoulder bags.

Jin Jir Food Market

This major market where locals purchase fruit, vegetables, flowers and other day to day items is a great place to uncover culinary delights the likes of which you have never seen.  You will mingle with an array of minority people and find local wares cheaper than in the Old Town but without the same selection. Happy hunting!
