The Bangbang festival (also called Lantern Festival) is one of the grand festivals for Naxi people in Lijiang.it's celebrated on Jan.15 Chinese Lunar Calender.There is an old saying:Dawa Naxi nu(means Naxi people get crazy during Chinese New Year),for about half month in the Lunar New year, they get pretty crazy to shop, eat, play. However, on the fifteenth day of the Chinese Lunar Calender , the Naxi people take the redundant agricultural products to sell in market, and buy things which they most need for the coming year, like hoe, rolling pin, sickle, bamboo products. Gradually, it formed a unique festival: Bangbang festival or Lantern Festival.
At the earliest Bangbang festival was held in Lijiang Sifang square, after the Lijiang develop tourism, there are more and more people in old town, it is not convenient for local people move things into and out from old town. That’s why they moved the market to outside of old town. People who participate the festival are not only farmers. Now the more and more different people participate such as: workers, city people, traders from outside of Lijiang, tourists doesn’t matter how old they are. Because there are many things are selling during the day: toys, farm tools which made ofwood or bamboo, flowers, potteries, wood furniture, fruits trees, seeds…On that day, the Naxi people cook glutinous rice ball(Tianyuan) themselves, and people eat them to denote union, harmony and happiness for the family.
In the evening, Naxi people go to the ancient Lijiang city, floating lanterns on river to make best wish for the living for the new year, burn joss paper for ancestors.
