Lijiang has a temperate climate although it can be very cold in winter. The average temperate in Lijiang is around 23°C (73°F). The year can be divided into the four seasons but it also has distinct a cold dry and a hot wet. The wet season, from June to October, peaks in July when the average rainfall is around 210 millimetres (8.3 in). August temperatures are the hottest averaging 28°C (83°F). Lijiang is coldest in December and January when temperatures average 16°C (40°F) during the day. Remember, there is a strong range of temperatures from day to night during winter. Night temperatures can get down to 3-4°C (37°F) and it can snow in the city so bring some winter woolies.
Being at high elevation Lijiang receives a lot of sunny days and is never so unfavourable to discourage visitors. The high season over summer from May to October and during Golden Week, China’s national week of celebrations, Lijiang is overrun with Chinese tourists, although you should still be able to find accommodation without too much trouble. It will be a quieter time to travel outside the peaks periods.
